EMPHASISE THE WALL'S IMPACT

To make a statement with your sideboard, choose a captivating centrepiece to hang above it. This focal point will immediately grab attention. Consider opting for a stunning print, a collection of prints, an elegant mirror, or a textural delight like a hat. Once you've chosen your wall hero, decide whether to position it centrally or off-centre. The decision should be based on how it complements your decorative items and whether you prefer a symmetrical or asymmetrical look. While both arrangements can be beautiful, an asymmetrical setup often brings a fresh and relaxed vibe.

CURATE YOUR DECORATIVE ITEMS

After finalising your wall hero, it's time to curate a selection of items to adorn your sideboard. Aim for a variety of sizes to create an appealing mix of heights and shapes, which adds visual interest and balance.

  • Tall: Adding height to your sideboard is important to counterbalance its long and slimline dimensions. Consider using a vase of flowers, elegant branches, a potted plant, or a stylish table lamp to create vertical interest. Position taller pieces to slightly overlap with the wall art, establishing a visual connection. In some cases, a striking tall piece can even replace the need for wall art altogether.
  • Medium: Sculptural objects work well in this category. Empty vases, succulents, upright books, or large candles can add elegance and style.
  • Low: Delicate bowls, strings of mud-beads, small candles, stacks of books, or nature-inspired sculptural objects like shells or coral are ideal for the low category. They bring charm and create a layered effect.

ACHIEVE BALANCE AND HARMONY

Once you have your selection of items, arrange them in front of the wall hero to create balance and harmony. Avoid a straight line arrangement, as it can become monotonous. Instead, create depth by placing taller items towards the back and bringing forward the lower-lying objects. Clustering a few objects together adds visual appeal.

Remember, when styling a sideboard, less is more. Avoid cluttering it with too many pieces, as this can make the space look messy and overwhelming.
