How to create an amazing outdoor area

Make the most of your outdoor living area by creating an amazing space no matter your lot size.
Outdoor living areas should cater to everyone and every event whether it be a casual BBQ, birthday celebration or just being an inviting area for family and friends to hang out. To ensure that your alfresco is the perfect place for you, here’s what to keep in mind when building your outdoor area.

THE SIZE OF YOUR AREA

To be able to properly plan the design of your outdoor living area, you should know exactly how big the space is that you are working with. This will help you decide on the size of furniture and any other items you would like in your area such as BBQ’ or pizza ovens.

PLANNING YOUR BUDGET

Planning your budget is an important step as this will help you decide on how much you can spend on your outdoor necessities and what’s left over for “nice to haves”. Having a smaller budget does not mean that your area will be any less impressive than having a bigger budget, you just have to be creative and clever on how you use it.

DESIGNING YOUR AREA
THE ENTERTAINER

When it comes to being the host for many events, seating is a vital component. Consider how many people you will need to have seats for and whether it will be for sit down dinners, cocktails or lounging. A combination of these will create depth with different heights and different options for your guests to enjoy.

CHILD FRIENDLY

The ages of children should be taken into consideration when designing an alfresco that is family friendly. An outdoor space should evolve as children grow older. For families with younger children, a sofa to lounge on is a comfy and cozy option with a nice outdoor mat for outdoor play.
As children hit their 20’s bar stools and dinner tables are a great place to congregate around and can be mixed with modular lounges.

GARDENER

Plants are an essential element to any outdoor area. You don’t have to have a green thumb but consider including a couple of statement plants either in pots, or hanging, to fill in any dead spaces. For those who love to get their hands dirty, work with structures to bring in hints of green like a hanging garden, planter pots or even vines near a pergola.

BUDGET CONSICIOUS

If you have a budget constraint, we suggest investing in good quality furniture. Think about how you will use the area and purchase sturdy furniture that you know will get used. You’ll find cheap furniture will often not last in the elements and you will be constantly repurchasing. Remember you don’t have to have everything at once and can gradually build up your area.

SMALLER SPACE

When working with a smaller space, it is important to measure any items before purchasing. Think about how the area will be used and purchase furniture accordingly. A smaller space may be used for casual gatherings and a BBQ rather than sit down dinners. Include space for the BBQ and two or three casual chairs and a statement coffee table. You can dress the area up with smaller pot plants with needed.
